Bacchus
in 14k White Gold
This is a wonderful, near mint, exquisitely crafted, authentic, 14k White Gold, Art Deco piece.
One cannot help but notice the finely detailed filigree and milgrain, beautifully incorporated into this exceptional piece. Another example of the fine work of designer’s and goldsmith’s, in the 1920’s and 1930’s.
The main gemstone is a natural, earth mined, oval cut amethyst (8mm x 10mm). The color evokes cheer and happiness. Without a doubt, this lovely ring will bring a smile to both the wearer and the admirer.
She is crafted of 2.1 grams of 14k white gold.
The maker of this ring “White, Wile & Warner,” was based out of Buffalo, New York. This ring bears its maker’s mark “WWW,” on the inside of the band/shank. This prominent manufacturer of gold rings, proudly stated in advertising: “RINGS IN WHICH THE STONES DO STAY.” (February 2, 1921 edition of the “Jewelers’ Circular.”) And, it appears that the maker was correct. The ameythst is original, as are the prongs which hold it in place.
Please don’t forget, amethyst is not as hard or resilient, as a sapphire or diamond. We recommended this ring be thoughtfully worn, preserving the fine gold design, and to avoid damaging the original, natural earth mined amethyst.
Amethyst was associated with Bacchus, the god of wine in early Greek legends. Greek’s believed that the gemstone prevented overindulgence of wine. Other legends included the belief, that wearing an amethyst would assist the wearer in business affairs, and problem solving in battle. We love amethyst, but are not certain the legend’s are true.
Historically, amethyst was set in religious jewelry, and even the Royal Crown Jewels, because of its beauty. The coronation regalia of British Royalty, is generously adorned with amethyst.
Sizing
The current size is 4 3/4
This ring can only be sized up 1/2 size (to a size 5 1/4). The design on the sides of the shank, continue lower than most rings. Because this ring is so small, the structure and original design on the shoulder’s, would be compromised if the ring were to be increased more than a half size. We will only increase this piece to a size 5 1/4.
Size Up: $90.00
Size Down: Cost: $75.00
White Gold and Rhodium Plating
Rhodium is a member of the Platinum family. It is a precious and extremely expensive metal. Depending on the market, Rhodium can cost twice that of gold and platinum.
The basis of all gold jewelry, is 24k pure gold, which is yellow.
Jewelry made of “White Gold” (10k, 14k, 18k), is almost always plated with Rhodium, as it is nearly impossible to mix pure yellow gold with other metals, to create the white color used in jewelry design. Rhodium resists scratching and tarnishing, giving a white, reflective appearance many designers, jewelers and jewelry owners desire.
When a piece of “White Gold” jewelry begins to show yellow or gold color, commensurate with wear, take the piece to a competent goldsmith or jeweler, who will clean and Rhodium Plate the piece for you, restoring the “white” gold finish.
