Tanzanite is a variety of the mineral Zoisite. It was discovered in the late 1960’s in the Merelani Hills of Tanzania. This is the only place in the world where Tanzanite has been found in sufficient abundance, to be commercially mined. Tiffany & Company named this gemstone Tanzanite, after its mother country Tanzania.
Most Tanzanite (Zoisite) is brown in color when mined from the earth. In some areas of Tanzania where this gem is found, the earth had naturally produced enough heat, to change the Zoisite from brown to blues and violets. Most Tanzanite is found in its natural state (brown), and treated with heat, changing its color to magnificent hues of blue’s and violet’s.
This gem is also pleochroic, which means different colors are seen at different angles. Additionally, when viewed in cool lighting (fluorescent) the blue in Tanzanite is emphasized. When Tanzanite is viewed in warm light (incandescent), violet to purple colors are more predominant. This gemstone displays a beautiful show of color, which is likely to please the most skeptical critic.
