Paraiba Tourmaline, was first discovered in one mine, located in the northeast region of the state Paraiba, Brazil, in the 1980’s. Thus, it was named after Paraiba, Brazil. Later, these rare tourmalines were discovered in Mozambique, Africa.
The crystals of this gemstone, are believed to have been formed under rare conditions. Trace elements, including copper and manganese, give the “Paraiba Tourmaline,” its stunning, electric, neon color.
The electric colors of the rare Paraiba Tourmaline, include violet, green blue, bluish green and yellow green. Many associate the color of Paraíba Tourmaline, to be an electric, aqua blue, described by many as “Windex Blue.”
Poor clarity of the Paraiba Tourmaline, is accepted as the norm in the gem industry. Rarely are these gemstones found in gem quality, above 1.00 carat.
